The Engine Test
Laboratory is a 19,000 S.F. facility that was completed in January
2002. The test lab contains eight engine test cells, an
instrumentation lab, machine shop, engine build area, conference
room, noise evaluation chamber and offices. Each test cell has been
equipped with dynamometer and support equipment that provide for
testing of a variety of spark and compression ignition engines.
Dynamometers
With power absorption
capabilities to 940 Horsepower and 10,000 RPM, KUS can meet the
requirements of almost any test.
Data Acquisition Systems
Karl Schmidt Unisia, Inc. utilizes flexible and easy to use test
cell control systems provided by
SAKOR Technologies.
These control systems allow our Engineers to quickly author any test
sequence that may be needed. Our base control systems have the
following capabilities:
- 16 Analog input
channels
- Pressure transducers ranging from 10 in/H2O to 150 PSI, Oil
Consumption, Blow-By, Other configurations as needed.
- 16 Analog
output channels
- Used to
control coolant temperature, intake manifold temperature,
dynamometer load, oil temperature, throttle position etc.
- 32
Thermocouple channels (K-Type)
- Calibrated
to +/- 1% of value
- Can be
expanded up to 1000 channels for thermal mapping
- 16 Digital
input channels
- Used to
monitor test cell safeties and other test cell devices
- 16 Digital
output channels
- Used to
control engine starters, test cell fans, fuel pumps, fuel
solenoids, water solenoids, etc.
- 4 Frequency
input channels
- Monitor
engine and dynamometer speed
- 2 High speed
analog inputs (5MHz)
- Monitor
cylinder pressures
- 4 Serial
Communications Ports
- Used to
communicate with intelligent systems such as meters for oil
consumption, barometric pressure and humidity
Fuel System
Each test
cell is capable of using any liquid fuel that may be required
for testing, supplied at any pressure from 0-150 lbs./inē. Fuel flow is measured with a
Mass-Flow type meter, capable of measuring flows from 3-300 pph
(pounds per hour) with an accuracy of 0.5% of reading. Our Fuel
system is also capable of supplying heated or cooled fuel to obtain the
desired output temperature.
